Hey folks,
I've been using phpBB for over 10 years now starting out with a 3.0 system, but this is the first request for system support I've had to post. My hosted system is currently running phpBB v3.3.11 using PHP 8.3.6, MySQL(i) 8.0.36, and AlmaLinux v8.9.0 standard. Appx 1,500 registered users.
We've developed a problem over the last 5 days with some very annoying system latency. The webserver we're on is a pretty hot box, it's got over 1TB memory, 60+ CPU cores, and it's lightly loaded - we share space with under 50 commercial businesses. Well, we're seeing sometimes between 45 up to 60 seconds latency with each command sent to the system. The webhost traced the problem specifically to our phpBB and it was advised to us that the commercial customers were experiencing severe performance degradation. They ran a very quick report and found that our system was using up close to 50+% of the entire CPU capacity of the server. Something changed and we're trying like h*ll to find out what! We did have at least one system crash during the early stages when we were shutting off all extensions, a manual cache erase fixed this problem and brought us back up without the latency. It returned in just a few minutes after the restart.
Just a bit of other background, we were upgraded from v3.2.4 to 3.3.11 back in January by phpBB Services and did experience some difficulties during the upgrade (NOT with the upgrade contractor!). During the last upgrade we ran into problems with a few extensions, one specifically was the Media Embed extension that was causing repeated crashes. We also had a devil of a time with the new security under Apache, all services were essentially switched "OFF" due to their new security protocols and needed to be turned on one by one individually as needed. So we've held off on upgrading the ones that still worked until we were satisfied the system was stable enough to finish the upgrades. Also we found out the other day while troubleshooting that none of the error logs have recorded *ANY* entries since the upgrade from 3.2.4 in January, that was unexpected and hinders troubleshooting.
We need the ability to do a total BB system shutdown in order to mitigate the latency to the commercial customers by the start of next week. The BB system is a component of a larger website and the webhost does have the ability to take the whole shooting match off-line, however that's like treating a patient with appendicitis by administering euthanasia. I understand that there is no method to actually stop the processes on v3.3.11 in their entirety (the disable switch in the ACP doesn't stop services), so I'm trying to figure out the most graceful method to execute a controlled shutdown and place the system essentially on temporary time-out while we sort through this further. I can't cause loss of business due to this latency issue for my webhost or we'll be looking for a new home for our system forthwith!
Appreciate any input you can provide. Thanks very much!
Eric
